Marc Lebeau denounces the colleagues who committed "a shameful act of compromise and ignominy" because of the "the propaganda value of their presence among the dignitaries ..." By engaging in a "shameful and objectionable behavior," they are guilty of a "severe and unforgivable attenuation of all ... recognized ethical and moral norms."

"Recherche et étique en temps de guerre." "La présence de scientifiques étrangers à ce colloque a créé un profond malaise dans la communauté scientifique,... participer à un colloque à Damas devant la presse et la télévision d’Etat revient à cautionner un régime tortionnaire, premier destructeur du patrimoine syrien...."

Archaeologists in Syria before 2011 kept "un modus operandi pieno di ambiguità, fatto di conservatorismo ed immobilità, e un approccio di derivazione coloniale." The task remains for young Italian archaeologists "di rifondare l’archeologia del Vicino Oriente Antico."
1.6 2017: A New Year after Years of Tragedy Besetting Cultural Heritage of Syria
February 11, 2017
text
"The DGAM, comprised of no more than 2500 staff members, including more than 800 archaeologists, architects, and engineers, continues to function professionally...
We lost great heroes, and some of our colleagues lost their homes and possessions. However, we managed to transport more than 90% of the museum collections to safe places...
Our goal is to constitute a unified vision, shared by all Syrians, which represents their collective memory and stresses that the Syrian heritage belongs to all Syrians notwithstanding any differences.
We do feel unfortunate as some people march to a different drumbeat, who seek for politicizing the Syrian cultural heritage to serve conspiracy agendas, that do not aim to rescue that heritage. Some of those people have worked in Syria but have been disloyal to and have attacked our institution, which has always provided them with all the help needed. "

"Desecrated but still majestic: inside Palmyra after second Isis occupation." Quotes extensively "Maamoun Abdulkarim, Syria’s director of antiquities, who had already transported most of the ancient statues in the city’s museum to Damascus":
“Destroying our heritage is the same as killing a child,” he said. Much of the ancient city could be rebuilt, Abdulkarim added, but apart from some urgent stabilisation, it would have to wait until peace returned to the country.
Syria is full of ancient artefacts such as the ones from Palmyra and it has been Abdulkarim’s job to try to rescue them. His mission of “cultural diplomacy” between parties to the conflict and foreign powers is not easy, he said, adding that people accuse him of whitewashing for Bashar al-Assad’s government.
...
Despite this, he said: “The majority of Syrian people accept me and the job I’m trying to do, in government-controlled areas and non-government-controlled areas.” Still, he would rather not be doing it. Exhausted from five years of scrambling to protect the country’s heritage, he has often tried to resign, but been met with entreaties to stay.

Intervenants: Marc Lebeau, Maurice Sartre.
